Opening Keynote Speaker
Renowned as one of Canada’s most respected national and international experts on world politics, Janice Gross Stein is the Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management and the founding Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. She is a regular contributor to The Bridge, Friday Focus, and the Paikin Podcast, as well as to CBC and the BBC.
Closing Keynote Speaker
Ihor Korbabicz has a rare talent: he can take a 40-slide deck of polling data and leave an audience laughing, nodding, and, most importantly, remembering what it all means. As President of Abacus Data, one of Canada’s most sought-after public opinion and strategy firms, he spends his days figuring out what Canadians really think, and his time on stage translating it into something people can actually use.
About
At the Global Nexus: International Education’s Role in Canada’s Global Leadership
From its earliest foundations to today’s complex and competitive global landscape, international education has played a defining role in connecting people, ideas, and opportunity across borders and shaping generations of globally engaged leaders. For six decades, CBIE has advanced this work, bringing the sector together, informing policy and practice, and positioning international education as a strategic instrument of Canada’s global engagement.
As we mark 60 years of impact, this milestone comes at a moment of significant global rupture and renewed purpose. The context in which international education operates is shifting, and long-standing assumptions about cooperation, mobility, and engagement are being redefined. International education now sits at the global nexus, shaping talent, partnerships, and influence in ways that directly affect Canada’s prosperity, resilience, and leadership on the world stage.
Taking place in Ottawa, on the traditional unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin People, this anniversary conference honours a proud legacy while looking decisively ahead. Together, we will examine how education, mobility, and global engagement can continue to strengthen partnerships, deepen collaboration, and prepare globally minded talent to succeed in a changing world, ensuring international education remains central to Canada’s future prosperity, resilience, and global leadership.
